such as those in Luliang region have made little economic progress. The village shown in the picture is
home to Mr. Liu, principal of Hongqi School.

- Hongqi School has ~2800
students in grades 1-9, 80% of whom come from farming families. The school employs 170 teachers,
including 10 substitutes on a salary of 150 RMB (less than $20) per
month. Located in the town of
Beicun, capital of Lan County, the school has no boarding facility but
is very attractive to farmers in the county. Many farmers leave their
fields behind and live in Beicun as laborers, just so that their
children can attend Hongqi School.

generated during cooking is sent through a tunnel under the bed to keep
the bed warm.
